Thrill and Chills, a family concert featuring the winners of the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra’s young performer’s competition, is set for 3 p.m. Sunday, March 13, at the La Salle-Peru High School Matthiessen Auditorium.
Dan Sommerville, conductor of IVSO, will present the winners of the young performer’s competition for 2022, along with an instrument-demonstration for narrator and orchestra, called “The Thrill of the Orchestra.” The composer of this piece was Russell Peck, whose orchestral compositions have received thousands of performances in cities across the world including, Kyiv, Warsaw, Montreal and Singapore, among others. Peck died March 1, 2009, in North Carolina.
The narrator for this program will be Roger Amm, who is a retired music teacher of 32 years from Ottawa High School. Amm serves on the Ottawa High board. He also has helped produce three Emmy-award winning documentaries by Kanestar Productions. He has performed leading roles in the musical “Les Misérables” and “Bright Star” at the Engle Lane Theater in Streator.
Winner of the Junior Division is Ava Rosengren, flutist, a freshman at Serena High School and the daughter of Tamil and Mike Rosengren, of Serena. She has played the flute since she was 6 years old as a student of Cindi Isenhower. Most recently she has studied at Music Studio 408 with Jennifer Etscheid and is a student of Sue Gillio. Ava is a member of the Illinois Valley Flute Ensemble playing alto flute. She has been selected for the Junior and Senior District #2 ILMEA band festivals the past four years, participated in many honor band festivals, flute camps and teaching days and is a member of the Serena High School Band under the direction of Geoff Pierce.

Senior Division Winner is Madison Vescogni, flutist, and is a junior at La Salle-Peru High School. She is the daughter of Brian and Michele Vescogni, of Peru. Maddie has studied privately with Sue Gillio at Music Suite 408 for the past five years and is a member of the Illinois Valley Flute Ensemble, playing the contrabass flute. At L-P she plays in the high school band wind ensemble, and was one of the 2021 drum majors for the Marching Cavaliers, all under the direction of Jeremy Stevens. She has participated in the District #2 Junior and Senior ILMEA bands and was selected as 2021 all-state musician. She was selected to the I-8 All-Conference Band as both a freshman and junior. Maddie has also participated in the annual Flute Day and summer flute retreat in Peru.
Presentation of Awards to the young performers will follow the winning performances.
The afternoon program also will feature “Die Fledermaus Overture,” by Johann Strauss Jr. (1825-1899) followed by “The Thrill of the Orchestra” by Russell Peck and narrated by Roger Amm.
Admission is by season membership or will be available at the door, or by purchasing tickets at www.ivso.org. Tickets are $20 for adults and free for students kindergarten through 12th grade. College students also gain free admission with an ID.
