April 28 hearing set in La Salle County bow-and-arrow killing

Varna man awaits do-over trial

La Salle County prosecutors say they’re ready to put a Varna man back on trial for the 2015 bow-and-arrow killing. The defense is not ready and will be back April 28 for a possible trial setting.

Bradley French, 28, awaits a do-over trial for allegedly killing Joshua Scaman of Ottawa, who died after being struck with a hunting arrow in a remote parking lot at Illinois Valley Community College.

French appeared Friday and Chief Deputy La Salle County State’s Attorney Greg Sticka said they are ready to go. The defense, however, requested a continuance. Chief Judge H. Chris Ryan Jr. approved that request but indicated he would like to get the case moving soon.

French was convicted and sentenced to 30 years after his first murder trial; but an appeals court threw out his conviction and sentence. French remains held in La Salle County Jail on $2 million bond awaiting re-trial.
