If you missed Tuesday morning’s Pearl Harbor Day remembrance at the Ottawa VFW, a plaque near the front entrance of the building serves as a reminder 365 days of the year of the three men who died in the Dec. 7, 1941, attack from Ottawa — Robert Halterman, Herman Koeppe and James McCarrens.

“We will never forget,” John Duback, of the Ottawa American Legion, read on Tuesday morning. “Dedicated to the memory of all our comrades who gave their ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. That these dead shall not have died in vain.”

The plaque was dedicated on the 50th anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack — and Tuesday marked the 80th anniversary. The American flag was placed at half staff, a salute and Taps was performed Tuesday in honor of the fallen sailors.
