Dabarkadz Grocery set to open Saturday in Streator

Ethnic grocery store will feature Filipino, Oriental items at Westgate Shopping Plaza

Dabarkadz Grocery in Streator is set to open at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20.

Dabarkadz Grocery, located at Westgate Shopping Plaza, is a retail store that sells ethnic grocery items, (Filipinos, Oriental, among others). It is an LLC and co-owned by four Filipina friends. The Streator Area Chamber of Commerce conducted a ceremonial ribbon cutting Thursday for the store’s opening.

For readers wondering what “Dabarkadz” means, it comes from the Filipino word “barkada,” which means group of friends (or best friends) who share a common interest(s), the business posted on its Facebook page.

“We simply flipped the word barkada and added the letter Z to make it sound cool (and unique to those who heard it the first time). It is commonly used as a slang in the Philippines,” the business wrote.

The Times is planning a more detailed feature soon on the business.
