Anyone strolling at Allen Park in Ottawa should take caution.
Parts of the sidewalk in Allen Park along the Illinois River have been closed, because they’re deteriorating and sinking into the water to the point where places that were once concrete are now covered with mud.
Ottawa Mayor Dan Aussem said the sidewalk along the river is in terrible shape and parts have fallen into the river bank. The city is exploring temporary measures until a plan can be made to start rebuilding the shore.
“Hopefully we can duplicate the shoreline on the north side where the old Central School cleanup was completed,” Aussem said.
The segments of the sidewalk that are still visible look like they’re either pulling up or sinking, including a section that has collapsed into the river.
