Spelling lesson ends with kindergarten ‘wedding’ at Kimes Elementary School in Streator

As the school year winds down, Catherine Venturi’s kindergarten students at Kimes Elementary School in Streator celebrated a very special event – the wedding of the letters Q and U!

“The wedding reinforces that idea that every time we write a word with a Q in kindergarten, we always follow the Q with a U,” Venturi said.

The wedding celebration consisted of the ceremony and a reception. The invitations asked the boys to dress as quarterbacks and the girls as queens. The class worked together to come up with the perfect gift for the couple – a quilt made of unique squares from each student. They also worked on a white carpet, just like in a real wedding.

When the day of the wedding finally arrived, students unrolled their special white carpet, which each student decorated with a Q and a U. Special hats and a large Q and U for the bride and groom also were created for the event.

Bryan Venturi, Streator Elementary School District’s technology director, performed the wedding ceremony. Once the ceremony was complete, students attended the reception where they opened gifts of Q-tips, quarters and quinoa.

What’s a wedding without a cake you say? After all of the gifts were opened, it was time for each student to enjoy a Little Debbie snack cake. The festivities concluded with a dance party.
