Elaine Flowers’ hat trick helps Ottawa girls soccer top Plano in 2011; Marquette baseball rolls to triumph over Peoria Christian in 2006

The Ottawa girls soccer team blanked visiting Plano, 5-0. Elaine Flowers scored three goals and passed for two assists for the Pirates, Kalyn Rightenburg added a pair of goals and two assists, and Kelsey Davis recorded an assist. Madelayne Wilson made five saves in goal to register the shutout.

The Streator softball squad rolled past Kaneland, 14-0. Brynn Johnson had a single, double, and home run for the Bulldogs, Payton Billups had a double and triple, and winning pitcher Murphi Armstrong allowed two hits, struck out 13, and had five singles and three RBIs.

The Sandwich softball club defeated Coal City, 8-3. Winning pitcher Morgan Murphy went the distance with six strikeouts and also clubbed a three-run home run, Hannah Prucha had a homer and three RBIs, and Tori Thompson and Jordan Johnson each had a pair of singles for the Indians.

The Seneca baseball team slipped past Westmont, 2-1. Fighting Irish pitcher Nate Coughlin fanned seven in the complete-game win, while Tyler Moore homered and Eric Adkins doubled.

The Woodland/Flanagan-Cornell baseball club outlasted Fisher 2-1 in 10 innings. Warriors starter Alex Bullard went the distance allowing just one hit, striking out 18, and driving in a run at the plate. Alex Alessi also had an RBI for WFC.

The Ottawa baseball team topped Sterling, 4-0. Pirates’ winning pitcher Corey Kimes struck out 12 in a complete-game effort, while Adam Burant had an RBI single and two-run homer, and Mitch Johnson a run-scoring double.

The Marquette baseball squad slugged past Peoria Christian 14-4 at Masinelli Field. The Crusaders were led by Tom McConnaughhay (three doubles, three RBIs), J.C. Thumm (double, triple), Jeff Armstrong (two singles), Nick Abernathy (two singles), and Drew Gay (winning pitcher, 3 K).

The Newark baseball team defeated host Serena 8-4 in nine innings. Norsemen’s winning pitcher Kyle Janssen struck out 16 while slugging a game-tying three-run homer in the seventh, and the eventual game-winning RBI single in the ninth. Dale Johnson (double) had three hits and a pair of RBIs and Mitch Dunlap homered for NHS. Charlie Boyd had two hits for the Huskers, while Jeremy Foreman fanned 10 on the hill.

May 2, 1986

The Marquette baseball squad topped host Streator, 14-6. Crusaders’ T.J. Less singled, doubled, and homered while winning pitcher Rob Thompson doubled and tripled. The Bulldogs’ Dave Woolford posted three hits.
