EL PASO – The Fieldcrest girls basketball squad, ranked No 8 in the most recent Associated Press Class 1A poll, jumped to a 24-9 halftime lead and topped El Paso-Gridley, 50-26, for its 20th win of the season.
Haley Carver rifled in 18 points to lead all scorers, while Ashlyn May contributed 14 points, six steals and six assists to the Heart of Illinois Conference win. Ella Goodrich added nine points and eight rebounds as the Knights improved to 8-1 in the HOIC, 20-1 overall.
Serena 59, Indian Creek 22: At Shabbona, Katie Baker turned in 20 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists for the Huskers, now 21-2, 5-0 in the Little Ten Conference.
Jenna Setchell added 15 points on five 3-pointers, Paisley Twait posted eight points, five boards, five assists and four steals in the win, with Makayla McNally adding six points and 11 rebounds and Reese Cole four points and eight caroms.
Earlville 53, Hiawatha 12: At Kirkland, Elizabeth Browder outscored the Hawks all by herself with 22 points, adding four rebounds and five assists for the Red Raiders, now 10-5, 3-1 in the Little Ten Conference.
Madyson Olson posted 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals and Brooklyn Guelde 10 points, seven caroms and three assists for the winners.
Somonauk 39, Hinckley-Big Rock 33: At Somonauk, the Bobcats took a 14-8 first-quarter lead, then held on to lift their record to 8-12, 3-3 in the Little Ten Conference.
Maggie Roberts led the way with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, with Haley McCoy chipping in 13 points and two steals and Josie Rader seven points, eight boards, eight steals and three blocks.
Newark 54, Mendota 23: At Newark, the Norsemen moved to 10-5 on the year with the non-conference win, led by Kelly Snyder’s 14 points, nine rebounds and six steals. Also, KJ Friestad added 12 points, nine boards and six steals and Gwyneth O’Connell nine points.
Boys basketball
South Beloit 48, Earlville 28: At Earlville, Griffin Cook scored 15 points, but that wasn’t enough as the Red Raiders dropped to 5-11 overall this season.
Wrestling
Sandwich 47, Ottawa 24: At Sandwich, there were only four contested matches, three of them won by the Indians: Ashlyn Strenz by pin (:57) at 113 pounds, Aiden Linden by tech fall (19-4) at 152 and Alex Alfaro by pin (:23) at 195.
The Pirates lone winner was Landon Marx by pin (5:19) at 120 pounds.
