Ottawa Elementary hosts first cross country meet
Ottawa Elementary hosted its first cross country meet of its inaugural season against Princeton, Marquette and Seneca.
The girls event was won by Marquette, 18-45, over Ottawa. Princeton’s Jocelyn Strouss won in a time of 14:56. The top finisher for Marquette was Lucy McGrath (third, 15:52). Top finishers for Ottawa were Malina Rodriguez (sixth, 16:44), Rowan Weems (12th, 18:52), Savannah Markey (13th, 18:58), Avery Thompson (14th, 19:01) and Zadie Ortiz (17th, 19:47).
The boys standings finished Ottawa 17, Marquette 59 and Seneca 62. The winner was Carter Noonan (12:48). Other top finishers for Ottawa were Kaleb Nimke (third, 14:38), Tyler Leach (fourth, 14:38), Grant Smithmeyer (sixth, 14:45), Griffin Skinner (seventh, 15:06). Marquette’s first across was Hunter Heuser (fifth, 14:44).
Grand Ridge girls cagers fall
Grand Ridge’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams lost games to Northlawn. The 7s fell, 12-10, in overtime (Lexi Sawin eight points, including game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer of regulation); and the eighth grade Mohawks lost, 24-11, (Ava Offermann 11 points).
Marquette girls hoops earns split
Marquette’s eighth grade girls basketball team lost, 36-9, to La Salle Trinity, with Anna Hjerpe scoring six points. The MA 7s won, 36-11, paced by Hjerpe (17 points) and Hunter Hopkins (12).
Marquette also bested Tonica, 60-2, led by 16 points each from Hjerpe, Hopkins and Morgan Collins.
Rams win tournament
Shepherd’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams won the Ron Moir Memorial titles over Peotone. The 7s won, 30-9, (Ashlyn Ganiere 18 points, Reese Purcell four, Meredith Waldron four); while the eighth grade Rams triumphed, 21-8, (Kindley Moore five points, four each from Belle Markey, Hayley Ewers, Mary Stisser and Shaelyn Miller).
Previously, Shepherd swept Northlawn – the 7s winning, 29-8, (Waldron 10, Ganiere nine, Purcell six) and 8s winning, 39-5, (Stisser 12, Ewers six, Markey six, Moore five) – and also Morris, with the 7s winning, 30-1, (Ganiere 20, Purcell six) and eighth graders victorious, 38-12, (Stisser 15, Moore 13, Ganiere eight).
Sixth grade Cyclones earn first win
Central’s sixth grade girls basketball team (1-6) topped Morris Saratoga, 22-20. Lily Brewer (10 points), Tyannah Johnson (four) and Caroline Smelko (four) led the Cyclones.
