OTTAWA – After not being able to have the Ottawa Summer Recreation Tennis Tournament in 2020, the return of the annual event continued the tradition of fun and competitive tennis for all who participated. The 2021 tournament included about 120 individual entries across 17 divisions and was played during the week of July 19-23.
In 10U boys singles, Joey Tipple claimed first place and Brennen Heaver second. Jack Oslanzi earned the consolation championship. Jack Oslanzi teamed up with Jude Willet to defeat Brennen Heaver and Drew McGinnis to claim first place in 10U boys doubles.
The 10U girls singles championship went to Millyana Heredia, and Daniela Melendez came in second. Ashlyn Olesen won the consolation championship.
Gwen Jimenez won the 13U girls singles championship. Caitlyn Trettenero placed second, and Chloe Carmona was the consolation champion.
In 13U boys singles competition, Connor Barth came in first place, while Evan Krafft took second. Nick Hachenberger was the consolation champion. The match of the tournament was in the 13U boys doubles division, as Evan Krafft and Connor Barth faced Sam Clift and Rory Moore. Clift and Moore were down, 7-2, but fought their way back to 9-9. Krafft and Barth edged them out, 11-9, to claim the championship. The Fernandez brothers, Aleixo and Luca, were the consolation champions.
In the largest draw of the tournament with 16 entries, Joe Pohar won the 17U boys singles division. Ethan Krafft came in second, while Ryan Beck claimed the consolation championship in a tight match. The boys 17U doubles champions were Ethan Picco and Andrew Bolis. They defeated Logan Goetsch and Daniel Reinhardt, who took second place. Ethan Krafft and Adam Gross won the consolation championship.
In 17U girls singles, Ella Marvel came in first, while Carlie Miller took second. Rylee O’Fallon was the consolation champ. Carlie Miller teamed up with Kyleigh Olszewski to win the 17U girls doubles division. Rylee O’Fallon and Sara Meyer placed second, while Angela Smudzinski and Jenisis Greening were the consolation winners.
The adult divisions saw some competitive play as well.
Aaron Guenther returned to win the men’s singles championship. David Rashid took second, and Nathan Meyer was the consolation champion. Guenther and his brother Matt teamed up to claim the men’s doubles division. They defeated Rashid and partner Justin Ainsely, who took second. Alex Koziel and Kurtis Carls won the consolation championship.
In somewhat of a family affair, Tracey and Regan O’Fallon won the women’s doubles championship by defeating Rylee O’Fallon and Ella Marvel. Amethyst Ernat and Grace Filipiak won the consolation championship. Laura Thiry won the women’s legends singles division. Amy Stumpf came in second; Mahalia Johnson third.
In junior family doubles, Jason Marvel and son John won the championship, while Ambrosio Melendez and daughter Daniela came in second. Gwen and Maera Jimenez won the consolation championship. In family doubles, Ella and Jack Marvel teamed up to defeat Tracey and Regan O’Fallon to win the championship. The O’Fallons took second, while Rick and Matt Grant claimed the consolation prize.
The final night of the tournament was the mixed doubles division. Justin Ainsely and Olivia Ernat were the champions. Steve and Bergen Johnson finished in second place, with Grace Filipiak and Aaron Brandner winning the consolation championship.
