The Seneca boys track and field team matched what their girls team did just a week ago, winning its own Class 1A sectional in convincing fashion Wednesday.
The Irish totaled 106 points, while locally, Marquette was seventh (28), Newark 10th (19) and Somonauk 14th (2).
The winners advanced to state in all four of the relays races, taking first in the 400 relay with Chase Hauch, Trey Hauch, Kolya Cato and Ryan McCauley (44.60 seconds), and second in the 800 relay with the Hauchs, McCauley and Given Siegel (1:34.40), the 1600 relay with Trey Hauch, Billy Glasscock, Carson Collet and Wilson Widman (3:43.32), and the 3200 relay with Glasscock, Chris Poyner, Spencer DeGraaf and Brady Danek (8:51.20).
Collet also advanced with a first in the pole vault (3.71 meters) and second in the triple jump (12.13m), while seconds went to Siegel in the 100 hurdles (16.45), Carter Thomas in the discus (34.53m) and Nathan Grant in the high jump (1.71m).
For Marquette, distance ace Lucas Hoffman claimed first place in the 800 meters in 2:04.73 and second in the 1600 in 4:57.69.
Newark’s lone advancer was Steve Martin, who got a second place in the 400 meters with a 52.71 seconds.
Streator’s Danko advances to state at Geneseo: At the Geneseo 2A Sectional, Streator’s Kody Danko placed first in the 800 meters to advance to next weekend’s IHSA boys state meet. Danko’s time was 2:00.15.
Wrestling
Sandwich 55, Ottawa 14: At Sandwich, the Indians rolled past the Pirates. Claiming wins on the mat for the hosts were Ashlyn Strenz at 113 (2:57), Aiden Linden at 152 (TF 17-2), Seven Tonga at 160 (1:23), Bryce Decker at 170 (1:55), Alex Alfaro (TF, 19-4), and Jaime Serrano at 285 (6-4).
For OHS, winners were Casey Kammerer at 120 (20-6), Tristan Simmons at 126 (15-4), and Grayson Johnson at 132 (:33).
Seneca 74, Normal U-High 6; Seneca 75, Decatur MacArthur 3: At Normal U-High, the Seneca wrestling team finished off its regular season with two more dual wins, besting Normal U-High and Decatur MacArthur. The wins leave the Irish matmen with a record of 33-2 on the year.
Taking contested decisions against the Pioneers were Kyler Hahn at 113 (22-6), Owen Fiener at 132 (5:21), Isaac Marques at 160 (1:01), Gavin Robertson at 182 (:47) and Maveric Varland at 220 (6-1).
For the Irish against MacArthur, earning wins were Varland at 220 (8-2) and Nathan Elliott at 285 (7:54, 2 OTs).
