Pros and cons of vaccinating your pet

While vaccines can protect our furry friends from many highly contagious and deadly diseases, pet parents should give thoughtful consideration to the risks and benefits of each one.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), not only are there different vaccines for different diseases, there are different types and combinations of vaccines. And not every pet needs to be vaccinated against every disease.

Most veterinarians, however, highly recommend administering core vaccines to healthy pets. For dogs, canine parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis and rabies are considered core vaccines. For cats, panleukopenia (feline distemper), feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus type I (rhinotracheitis) and rabies are considered core vaccines. Additional “non-core vaccines” such as those for feline leukemia and canine kennel cough may be appropriate based on the pet’s particular needs, according to ASPCA.

While modern vaccines are extremely effective and safe, some pets may experience side effects following a procedure, such as soreness or swelling at the injection site. Rarely is veterinary medical attention needed for those minor side effects. And the benefits far outweigh the risks for your furry friend. Pet parents should talk with their veterinarians about what to expect after vaccination as well as inform them if their pet has had prior reactions to any vaccine or medication.

Another important consideration when it comes to vaccinations? Remaining in compliance with local regulations. For instance, some states require yearly vaccinations while others call for

vaccines every three years.

A veterinarian can best determine a vaccination schedule for your pet. This will depend on the type of vaccine, your pet’s age, medical history, environment and lifestyle.

One of the easiest ways to help your furry friend live a long, healthy life is to vaccinate. Schedule your appointment today.
