State police investigating fatal crash into Des Plaines River

Car reportedly struck tree in Lyons before entering the river

Illinois State Police are investigating a Sunday morning car crash that left two people dead after the vehicle struck a tree and rolled into the Des Plaines River.

State police confirmed Sunday afternoon that a man’s body had been found in the river. A few hours later, police said a woman’s body was also found underneath the bridge near where the crash occurred.

Neither individual has been identified.

Riverside police responded Sunday morning to a vehicle that was found partially submerged in the Des Plaines River across from 419 Fairbank Road. They located a red 2017 Hyundai sedan, which was stuck due to ice and snow.

Police and fire personnel checked inside to find the vehicle unoccupied. The vehicle was listed to an address in Chicago, police said. The car which entered the river off Ogden and Lawndale avenues in Lyons, was successfully pulled out of the water about 10 a.m..

Riverside police officers searched the shoreline for possible victims and found none. Fire personnel also flew a drone over the river looking for possible victims still in the water, however, none were found, police said.

It is not known at what time the car entered the water. It does appear that the car was not in the water for an extended period of time, police said.
