Plano library announces upcoming programs

Crafts To Go Kits: Available Tuesday, March 1. March’s craft is a terracotta leprechaun hat decoration. Kits available at the Checkout Desk to adults and high school students on a first come, first served basis, while supplies last.

New Life for Old Bags: Saturday, March 12, 10:30 a.m. to noon, in-person. Help turn plastic shopping bags into sleeping mats for the homeless. Knit & Crochet Group: Thursdays, 10 a.m. to noon, via Zoom. This informal group works on their own projects, discusses types and colors of yarn and helps each other with new or tricky patterns. Storm Chasing 101: Thursday, March 3, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Take a ride with the Illinois Storm Chasers, diving deep into storm chasing, local climatology and the reason why behind severe weather. Q & A will follow. Masks required. No registration required.

Writers’ Group: Feb. 24, March 10, 6:30 to 8 p.m. in-person or via Zoom. Join other writers to discuss your work. Open to adults and high school students. Masks required for in person attendees. No registration required. Held in the lower level meeting room. The Zoom meeting link is available on the Programs page of the library’s website.

Book Club: Wednesday, March 16, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m., in-person. The book for March, “American Dirt” by Jeanine Cummins, will be discussed. The book for April will be “Book of Longings” by Sue Monk Kidd and will be available at the Checkout Desk. This group reads a variety of genres. Newcomers are welcome anytime. Masks required.

Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP): Wednesday, March 9, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in-person. Kendall-Grundy Community Action Services will be at the Plano Library to provide help with LIHEAP applications. Please bring the following to apply: Social Security cards for every household member; proof of total income for the last 30 days for anyone 18 years or older in the household; and current gas and electric bills. Technology Help Desk: Saturday, Feb. 26, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., in-person. A free, drop-in opportunity to meet with tech expert Robert Mitilieri. He’ll be here to assist with questions you may have about your computer, cell phone, tablet, or e-reader. Bring your device with you for the best experience. Masks required. No registration required.

Youth programs

Preschool Storytime: Mondays, Feb. 21, 28 and March 7, 10:30 to 11:10 a.m., in-person. For ages 3-6. Features simple stories, music, movement activities and a simple craft. Parents must remain in the Kids’ Library during the program. For independent 3-6 year olds, without an adult. Masks required. Registration required. Rhyme Time: Wednesdays, Feb. 23, and March 2, 9, 10:30 to 11 a.m. and 6 to 6:30 p.m., in-person. For babies to age 3. This lap sit storytime features action rhymes, finger plays, songs, movement activities, a simple story, and parent-child reading time. Active adult participation is an integral part of this program. Bring a blanket for your family to sit on. For babies to age 3 accompanied by an adult. Masks required for all adults and children 3 and older. Happy Pig Day with Elephant and Piggie: Monday, Feb. 28, 6 to 7 p.m. or Tuesday, March 1, 6 to 7 p.m. For grades K-3. Join us as we celebrate National Pig Day with our favorite pig, Piggie. Of course, Gerald will join the party as well. We’ll learn about pigs (and elephants), make Pig Day crafts, and read some of our favorite Mo Willems books. Masks required. Registration required. Pizza and Pages: Tuesday, March 8 or Thursday, March 10, 4:45 to 5:30 p.m., for grades 3-5, in-person or via Zoom. Join us in person (masks and social distancing required) or join us by Zoom for our Pizza & Pages book discussion. Pizza will be served. “The 39 Clues” by Rick Riordan will be discussed.
