Got books? Everything you need to know about Yorkville Library’s biggest used book sale

Everything you’ve always wanted to know about the Friends of the Yorkville Library’s annual used book sale:

When and where is the Yorkville Library’s Used Book Sale?

The book sale is Saturday, Sept. 4 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.at the Yorkville Public Library, 902 Game Farm Rd. in the Michelle Pfister Meeting Room.

Because of the quantity of books, and the need to space people and books, signs will provide directions to other parts of the library being used.

Why is this the biggest book sale ever for the Friends of the Library?

The annual Used Book Sale was not held in 2020 because of Covid-19. We’ve been accepting donations of books since fall 2019 – that’s nearly two years of accumulated books.

What are you doing to make this a safe place during this pandemic?

We have spread out the tables and are using several separate library spaces. Masks are encouraged.

From what source do you get these books? Are they Library books?

Nearly all of the books are donated by people. Very few are discarded books from either the Yorkville Library or other libraries. Many people did a lot of cleaning during the Pandemic, too!

What kind of books are there?

There will be a huge variety of fiction and nonfiction for adults and children. Books are in paperback and hardcover format.

When books are donated, Friends volunteers sort these into subjects (religion, history, cook books, animals, etc.), box and label each. At the book sale, visible signs indicate the subject area of each table of books.

Are there DVDs and audio books?

Yes, we have received a large donation of audio-visual materials.

What is the purpose of the Used Book Sale?

Libraries everywhere receive donations of books; people are reluctant to simply discard books. The Friends of the Library use this opportunity to place books in the hands of people of all ages at affordable prices and to raise money to support the Library.

How much are the books?

All books are $.50-$2. On Sunday, the books are half-priced ($.25 - $1). At 3 p.m. on Sunday, shoppers can fill a provided paper bag for $5.

Are credit cards accepted?

Yes. Checks, cash, or credit cards are accepted.

What does the Friends do with the money raised?

The money is used to pay for library programs and services. For example, the Children’s Summer Reading Program (which had 370 participants) was partially funded by the proceeds from the book sale. “Illinois Storm Chasers” program held August 11 – free to the public – was also paid by the Friends. Book Page, a monthly book review magazine, also free to the public, is funded by the Friends. The Friends paid half the cost of the audio-visual system in the Michelle Pfister Meeting Room.

What happens with the books left from the sale?

The “Summer’s End Book Sale” takes place from Sept. 7 through Sept. 17 during regular library hours. All books are half price, $.25 - $1.

Left-over books are then donated to various groups. In the past, books have been donated to area senior centers, schools, and the Kendall County Jail. Books may also go to the Salvation Army, Caring Hands, Good Will, etc.

How can I become a Friend of the Library?
