Wrestling: Yorkville Christian sending nine to state after big day at Coal City

The Yorkville Christian wrestling team crowned four sectional champions and qualified all nine of its wrestlers for state at Saturday’s Class 1A Coal City Sectional.

Sectional champions for the Mustangs included Aiden Larsen (106 pounds), Noah Dial (132), Tyler Martinez (160) and Jackson Gillen (170).

After a technical fall and major decision in his first two contested matches, Larsen pinned Seneca’s Kyler Hahn in 2:12 in the 106-pound final. Dial had a technical and pin to reach the 132-pound final, where he won by technical fall over Omar Ramirez of Phoenix.

Martinez had a pin and major decision to reach the final at 160, where he pinned Manteno’s Carter Watkins in 5:06. Gillen pinned his first two opponents in contested matches to reach the 170-pound final, where he edged Coal City’s Joey Breneman 3-1 in the final.

Yorkville Christian runner-ups included Isaac Bourge (120), Grayson Johnson (126) and Michael Esquivel (heavweight). Drew Torza (152) was third and Braulio Flores (138) fourth for the Mustangs.
