Golf: Yorkville’s Mia Natividad in the lead after first round of Class 2A state tournament

FORSYTH – Yorkville junior Mia Natividad fired a 2-under par 70 for a one-shot lead after the first round of the Class 2A state tournament on Friday at Hickory Point Golf Course.

Natividad, making her first state tournament appearance, leads Geneva senior Reese Clark, Mascoutah junior Sophia Florek and Barrington senior Mara Janess going into Saturday’s final round. Two other players are two shots back.

Natividad had five birdies and three bogeys, with the rest pars, in her round. She made the turn at 1-over par and then shot a 3-under 33 on her second nine.

Oswego Co-Op sophomore Shyell Lowe shot an 88 and was in 89th place.

At the Class 3A boys state tournament at The Den at Fox Creek in Bloomington, Oswego East senior Gavin Hjelle shot a 4-over par 76 to tie for 49th. Hjelle had three birdies on his first nine in making the turn at 1-under par, at one point sitting in sixth place, but shot 5-over on the second nine with a bogey and two doubles.

At the Class 1A girls state tournament at Red Tail Run Golf Course Plano senior Faith Malloy shot an 88 to tie for 55th.
