Plans are in the works for Batavia High School graduation, prom

BATAVIA – Batavia High School is working on plans for a prom event and graduation. This comes after the district announced Tuesday that students will return five days a week.

According to a letter from the district to families, there will not be a traditional prom, but rather a seniors-only celebration May 8 at the high school. A survey of the students indicated that the majority requested a “fancy” event where photos can be taken. It will also include food, music, prizes and more. Formal apparel is not required and students from other districts cannot attend, the letter stated.

The event capacity has yet to be announced, and tickets will go on sale the week of April 26.

The district is looking at three possibilities for graduation. The first one is an indoor ceremony at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center on May 26, which is the first preference because it won’t be dependent on weather, the letter stated. The district will work with NIU and the DeKalb County Health Department to determine capacity limits, and more than one ceremony is a possibility.

The second plan would be an outdoor ceremony at NIU’s Huskie Stadium on May 26 with a rain date of May 27. The letter states that this option would offer more seating and parking capacity than Bulldog Stadium. Similar to the indoor option, the school will work with officials to determine capacity, and there could be more than one ceremony.

The third option is an outdoor ceremony at Bulldog Stadium on May 26 with a rain date of May 27. This option would only be used if state of local authorities require the district to cancel the events at NIU, the letter stated. If this option is required, there would be multiple ceremonies and advanced distribution of tickets to the graduates.

Specific details will be communicated with families as they become available over the next few weeks, the letter stated.
