Girls track and field
During Day 2 of the IHSA girls track and field State Championship, 15 individuals and four relay teams across 13 different events punched their ticket to the finals, which will be held Saturday at O’Brien Field in Charleston.
St. Charles North had the most finals-qualifying performances on the day with six. Kara Glenn had the fastest preliminary time in both the Class 3A 800-meter run (2:07.85) and the 1,600 (4:48.57), with teammates Julia Rodney (fifth in 800, 2:11.89) and Gwen Hobson (10th in 1,600, 4:59.72), as well as the 4x800 (second, 9:10.48) also advancing to the finals.
Also finishing with the fastest preliminary time at the meet was Aurora Central Catholic’s Cecelia Hilby, who had the fastest time in the Class 2A 800 after running a 2:13.95. St. Francis’ 4x800 team also ran the fastest preliminary time in Class 2A, with the quartet of Alicen Sheldon, Elena Mamminga, Erin Hinsdale and Margaret Andrzejeski running a 9:38.60.
Hinsdale (1,600, 5:02.87) and Andrzejewski (800, 2:14.92) both took fourth in their respective events to advance to the finals in Class 2A. The Chargers’ Molly Russelburg and Kaneland’s Delainey Baran also advanced to the finals in the pole vault after clearing 3.30 meters.
St. Charles East had the relay team of Luca Ketter, Nicole Mayer, Madeline Piekarz and Siri Forsell run the third-fast 4x400 team in class 3A, finishing in 3:53.64. Mayer also qualified in the 800 after finishing in 10th (2:13.46) while Ketter, Piekarz and Forsell joined Fiona Post to run a 1:39.67 to qualify for the finals in the 4x200 after taking seventh.
Geneva had Ava Mehren and Leah Friede make it to the finals in the pole vault in Class 3A after clearing 4.35 meters. Sofia Borter added a qualification in the 1,600, running a 4:56.26 for fourth.
Burlington Central’s Laraiya Cunningham-Duncan and Batavia’s Abby Wirth both qualified in the long jump and triple jump. Cunningham-Duncan had the second-longest jumps (5.67 long jump, 11.65 triple jump) in both events, while Wirth had the fifth-longest in the triple (11.62) and eighth-furthest long (5.45). The Bulldogs also had Ingrid Wit advance to the finals in the shot put, throwing 11.93 meters for the ninth-longest throw.
Softball
(1) St. Charles North 4, (8) South Elgin 2: At the Class 4A Rolling Meadows regional final, Julianna Kouba hit a walk-off two-run home run to lift St. Charles North (23-2) to its sixth consecutive regional title. Abby Zawadzki and Jordyn McBride hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning.
(4) Geneva 4, (2) Belvidere 3 (8 innings): At the Class 3A Belvidere regional final, Jazmine Reddick hit a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth inning to help the Vikings (11-19) to their first regional title since 2019. Avery Edison drove in two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. Jillian Bultmann led the team with three hits.
(2) St. Francis 16, (6) Stienmetz 1 (4 innings): At the Class 3A St. Francis regional final, Mackenzie Murlick hit two home runs and drove in four runs to help the Spartans (21-8) to a regional title. Lilly Konen added two hits and three RBIS, Alyssa Freeman hit a two-run homer and Hannah Grivetti had three hits and drove home two runs.
Girls soccer
(4) St. Francis 6, (6) Argo 0: At the Argo Class 2A regional final, Lorraine Surina scored a hat trick and added an assist to help the Spartans (9-4) to a regional title. Macie Schweiner, Molly Marks and Ashley Klein all added scores in the win.
(3) Aurora Central Catholic 5, (2) Mendota 0: The Chargers (10-4-4) won their first regional title since 2018 with a win in the Class 1A Mendota regional title game.
(2) Plainfield Central 2, (6) Batavia 0: Batavia ended the season with a 6-10-2 record with a loss in the Class 2A Burlington Central regional title game.
(1) Genoa-Kingston 2, (5) Rosary 0: The Royals end the season with a 5-17-1 record with a loss in the Class 1A Genoa-Kingston regional title game.
