Bureau Valley, Mendota softball teams lose in regional finals

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

At Charleston: Mendota junior Mariyah Elam qualified for the IHSA Class 2A state finals in the high jump and triple jump.

Elam recorded the second-best jump during Friday’s preliminaries, leaping 11.65 meters. She also cleared 1.55 meters to advance to Saturday’s finals in the high jump.

Elam ran with Aby Buettner, Raegan Atherton and Jeniah Francis to set a school record in the 4x200 relay in 1:45.53, but the Trojans finished 14th to come up short of advancing. The top nine relays make the finals. Mendota finished less than a second behind the ninth-place team.

Francis also competed in the 100, finishing 21st in 12.67 seconds.

La Salle-Peru junior Aubrey Duttlinger advanced to the finals in the long jump with a leap of 5.18 meters, which tied for the 12th best prelim jump.

Duttlinger also competed in the triple jump, finishing 20th at 10.48.

L-P’s Aubrey Urbanski wrapped up her season by finishing 31st in the 800 in 2:30.41.

SOFTBALL

Stark County 8, Bureau Valley 7: The No. 5-seeded Storm scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a one-run lead, but Brooklynn Ostrowski launched a two-run walk-off home run to lift the No. 1 Rebels to the victory in the Class 1A Annawan-Wethersfield Regional championship.

Ali Carrington went 3 for 4 with two triples, a double, two RBIs and two runs for Bureau Valley (9-19), while Emily Wright doubled, drove in a run and scored a run and Kadyn Haage was 1 for 4 with a run and an RBI.

Danicka Benavidez was the losing pitcher in relief.

Stillman Valley 11, Mendota 0 (5 inn.): Karson Doyle had the only hit for the No. 5-seeded Trojans, who lost to the No. 1 Cardinals in the Class 2A Byron Regional championship in Byron.

Lexie Saylor was the losing pitcher for Mendota (12-20).

BOYS TENNIS

At Rochelle: The Mendota doubles team of Trey Lee and Favian Romero came up one win shy of a state berth at the Class 1A Rochelle Sectional.

The Trojan duo won its first match 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 before losing 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

BASEBALL

Mendota 10, Plano 2: Quinn Eddy went 2 for 3 with a double, three runs and an RBI to help the Trojans to a nonconference victory in their regular season finale in Plano.

Esten Otero and Dane Doyle each had a hit, two RBIs and a run for Mendota (14-14), while Collin Coss was 3 for 4 and drove in two runs.

Eddy also earned the win in relief, allowing four hits with three strikeouts and a walk in three scoreless innings.

Byron 13, Princeton 2 (5 inn.): Braden Shaw had the only hit for Princeton in a nonconference loss in its regular season finale in Princeton.

Hunter Spiegel was the losing pitcher for Princeton (8-20).

Kewanee 11, Bureau Valley 8: Logan Philhower doubled twice, scored two runs and drove in a run as the Storm lost a nonconference game in their regular season finale in Kewanee.

Drake Taylor was 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI for BV (14-14) and Aiden Litherland was 1 for 4 and drove in two runs.

Dylan Howlett was the losing pitcher.

Peoria Christian 10, Fieldcrest 1: Lucas Anson was 2 for 3 with a double and a run as the Knights lost a nonconference game in Peoria.

Drew Overocker was the losing pitcher for Fieldcrest (11-16).
