The No. 3-seeded Aurora Central Catholic girls soccer team came out aggressive against the No. 2 seed and host Mendota during the Class 1A Mendota Regional championship Friday in Mendota and never let up as the Chargers cruised to a 5-0 victory to advance to the Hinckley-Big Rock Sectional on Tuesday against top seed Byron.
Just 90 seconds into the game the Chargers nearly capitalized on a corner kick as Viviana Lujano just missed putting ACC on the board.
Their aggressiveness continued with the Chargers controlling the ball throughout. With 33:23 left in the first half, Kaelyn DeMars found a loose ball in front of the net and put the Chargers ahead 1-0.
“We are starting to click at the right time,” ACC coach Enrique Anaya said. “We came out aggressive with Maddie Berry and Kaelyn DeMars and it paid off as Kaelyn was able to find the back of the net.”
About two minutes later, the Chargers nearly made it 2-0 as a shot by Bella Matty just missed the net.
Almost three and a half minutes later, Matty had a point blank look, but Haley Diaz made a tremendous save to keep it a one goal game.
With ACC attacking again, Mendota’s Riley Erlenborn made a steal to halt the scoring opportunity. But Mendota was unable to get the offensive side of things going.
With 18:08 remaining in the half, Alexsa Javier made the most of her corner kick as she got the ball to Lujano, who put the Chargers ahead 2-0.
Then less than a minute later, Matty was able to get her first goal as she got into open space to put ACC ahead 3-0.
Diaz made two more saves, but with 5:28 remaining in the half, Matty again stole the ball, which led to her second goal of the night and a commanding 4-0 lead.
“We knew we had momentum coming in from the game earlier in the week,” Matty said. “I have to give the forwards the credit. We practice a lot playing through the ball and when we see an open shot we’re going to take it regardless if it goes in or not.”
Mendota came out more aggressive in the second half and limited the Chargers scoring opportunities, but the ACC defense was equally up to the task as the score remained 4-0 late into the game.
With 14:20 remaining, Lujano dribbled the ball down the sideline and then as she turned the corner centered the ball where Berry capped off the scoring with a shot over the head of Diaz for the 5-0 lead.
“I thought we came out with some nerves to start the game like we did the other night,” Mendota coach Nick Meyers said. “The difference was we were able to calm down and get some goals (Monday) unlike tonight, but the effort was great from a roster with young players and some seniors without a lot of experience. But I think the standard for Mendota soccer is to get a chance at a regional championship each year, which we’ve done three of the past four years.”
