Somonauk cheer makes state; Streator girls capture second victory: The Times Saturday Roundup

Competitive cheerleading

Somonauk advances to state: In the Joliet West Sectional, Somonauk’s team score of 91.83 was the second best in the Small Team division and good by a long shot to send the Bobcats on to the IHSA State Final Competition held next Friday and Saturday at Bloomington’s Grossinger Motors Arena.

Sandwich (82.30), also competing in the Small Team division, placed eighth of 15 squads.

Ottawa 9th at Farmington: In the Farmington Sectional, Ottawa’s was given a score of 83.68 to finish ninth in the 15-school Medium Team division. The top five teams advanced to state.

La Salle-Peru (81.43) placed 12th.

Boys basketball

Earlville 48, DePue 41: In the opening-round of the Little Ten Conference Tournament at Somonauk, the No. 6-seeded Red Raiders beat the No. 11 Little Giants and moves on to play No. 3 Indian Creek at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Leland 68, Hiawatha 44: In the opening-round of the Little Ten Conference Tournament at Somonauk, the Panthers handled the Hawks to advance on to a 5:30 p.m. Monday matchup against Hinckley-Big Rock.

Providence 51, Sandwich 41: At New Lenox, the the visiting Indians suffered the nonconference defeat despite 14 points scored by Dom Rome.

Noah Campbell added eight points for Sandwich.

Peotone 65, Woodland 49: At the Herscher Shootout, the Warriors slipped to 16-8 on the season with the loss.

Woodland is scheduled to visit old Midstate Conference foe Tri-Point on Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Roanoke-Benson 61, Fieldcrest 52: At Roanoke, Macy Gochanour scored 21 points as the Knights lost a nonconference game.

TeriLynn Timmerman added 15 points for Fieldcrest (13-11), while Pru Mangan put in 14.

Streator 45, Somonauk/Leland 35: At Pops Dale Gymnasium, the host Bulldogs (2-24) defeated the visiting Bobcats after trailing by one point at the half, earning their second victory of the season.

Ava Gwaltney (27 points), Maddie Wahl (six points) and Leah Krohe (five points, 10 rebounds) paced the Streator attack.

Seneca 36, Lanark Eastland 35: At the Seneca Shootout, the host Irish received a game-winning 3-pointer from Graysen Provance and saw Alyssa Zellers score her 1,000th varsity point as part of a 13-point game in the victory.

Provance finished with seven points. Evelyn O’Connor added eight for Seneca (19-7).

Marquette 54, Coal City 34: At the Seneca Shootout, the Crusaders (19-9) rolled past the Coalers led by a 21-point, six-rebound, four-steal performance from Kaitlyn Davis.

Morgan Nelson and Chloe Larson each added nine points for Marquette. Hunter Hopkins contributed eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.

Sandwich 42, Richmond-Burton 34: In Kishwaukee River Conference play, the Indians triumphed led by Alayla Harris' 11 points, 10 from Kayden Corneils and seven apiece scored by Bailey Frieders and Hannah Treptow – Treptow surpassing 1,000 career varsity points.

Boys wrestling

Seneca Chicagoland Prairie champs: At the Chicagoland Prairie Conference Duals hosted by Melrose Park, Seneca captured the team title of the six-team event, followed by runner-up St. Bede and fourth-place Marquette.

Seneca scored a 72-11 win over Dwight, a 72-12 victory over Walther Christian, a 64-18 win over St. Bede, a 54-28 victory over Marquette and a 62-15 handling of Westmont.

Chris Thompson, Raiden Terry, Jeremy Gagnon, Avery Phillips and Ryan Flynn all enjoyed 5-0 days for Seneca. Going 4-1 were Wyatt Coop, Ryker Terry, Nick Grant, Landen Venecia and Alex Gagnon.

For Marquette, Reily Leifheit, Landyn McEmery and Alex Schaefer all went 5-0 on the day. Brysen Manly and Beau Thompson added four wins each for the Crusaders.
