Grace United Methodist Church, 1345 Chartres St., La Salle, will have a Blue Christmas service at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19.
A Blue Christmas service is a quiet, contemplative service that usually happens on the evening of Dec. 21, the winter solstice. This day, which has the longest night and the shortest day, is symbolic of darker nights, when people find themselves grieving, lonely or longing for something better.
During this service, lost loved ones are honored and recognized, along those who are experiencing grief. Those in attendance collectively pray and support one another. All are invited. The church is handicapped accessible.
