KANKAKEE — A Saturday afternoon fire inside the former General Foods mill location on Kankakee’s north side was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.
Kankakee Fire Chief Bryan LaRoche reported that at 12:45 p.m. Saturday crews responded to a fire call at 980 N. Hobbie Ave. in the former mill structure.
Upon arrival, firefighters found about 100 people had been engaged in an Air Soft war games event inside the structure. The fire appeared to have been created by the use of some type of pyrotechnic devices.
The property has been used for these type of events during the past few years, but the city was not aware the property was being used Saturday.
Fire was found on the first floor, involving wooden pallets and mattresses. The fire was quickly put out, LaRoche said, with the assistance of the fire departments of Bradley, Bourbonnais and Limestone.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. LaRoche said the fire was caused by and during the Air Soft game.
There was no damage done to the long-vacant mill property. The mill property has not been used since the Heinz pet food manufacturing operation closed in 1997.
