KANKAKEE — On the day Sarah Washington was killed in June 2014, her longtime boyfriend, Greg Dismuke, met in their Kankakee apartment with the man accused of shooting Washington, Rex Frank.
Frank is alleged to have shot the 25-year-old Washington twice in the head on June 26, 2014.
Tuesday marked the second day of the trial, which is expected to conclude on Friday before Judge Clark Erickson.
Since he already is serving a 45-year prison sentence after pleading guilty to the July 2014 shooting death of Rian Maiden, Frank is facing a sentence of natural life if convicted.
Asked by Prosecutor Daniel Reedy if someone came over to the apartment that day, Dismuke testified Frank came over and talked to him about getting a gun, and also asked him for money.
Dismuke also testified he and two other men drove to Harvey to buy iPhones that they were going to bring back to Kankakee and sell.
Dismuke said Frank called him asking if they got the phones.
“I told him we were on the way to get them,” Dismuke said.
On the trip back to Kankakee at 4 p.m., Dismuke said he got a call from Frank.
“(Frank) said. Go see what is going on over at your house. They got caution tape around the house and the police are there,’” Dismuke said.
Dismuke said another caller told him the same thing.
“I tried to call Sarah,” he said.
On cross examination, Public Defender Lawrence Beaumont asked Dismuke about not showing up at the crime scene.
“Didn’t you go over (to the house)?” Beaumont said.
“No,” Dismuke said.
“You didn’t go comfort (Washington’s) mother? You didn’t go see her body? You didn’t go anywhere near that house,” Beaumont said.
“No,” Dismuke said.
Beaumont asked Dismuke if he was ever violent toward Washington.
“Isn’t it true you beat her?” Beaumont said.
“You got any evidence?” Dismuke replied.
“So you are telling us you did not hit her with a bat, strangle her and punch her in the face?” Beaumont said.
“It’s not true,” Dismuke said.
Earlier testimony
Kathy Washington, Sarah’s mother, testified the two ran errands in the morning on June 26.
At about 4:30 p.m., Kathy Washington went to pick her up to take her to her CNA job at Riverside Medical Center.
She honked the horn and called her daughter’s cellphone. When there was no answer, Kathy Washington went into the apartment.
She called for her daughter. When there was no reply, Kathy Washington walked into the bedroom and found her daughter shot in the head.
