3 Tips for Selecting Firearm Storage Locations

As a firearm owner, storing guns safely and effectively should be one of your primary concerns. There is always a balancing act between storing guns so that they are easy to get to if you need them, and keeping them safe and secure, especially from children or inexperienced users. Here are 3 tips for selecting proper locations for firearm storage:

1. If you own guns for home self-defense, keeping one in your bedroom makes sense in case of a nighttime home invasion, since you’d want to access it readily. However, it would be prudent to consider other low-visibility gun safes around the house, such as in the living room or kitchen. The majority of break-ins actually occur during the day, when a burglar thinks no one is home. In this scenario, having a defensive firearm that you or your spouse can access quickly and easily is advisable.

2. For range or hunting guns, it is smart to have more secure storage in a less obvious place inside the home. Guns that you’d use on the weekends for hunting or for practice at a gun range should be stored in a more traditional safe somewhere in the basement or attic to ensure that they can’t be accessed easily by children or thieves. You could store these types of firearms partially disassembled, then reassemble them as needed for added peace of mind.

3. If you are in possession of a family heirloom-type firearm, show it off! A wall mount for a classic firearm that has sentimental value is a great conversation starter, and lets you honor a piece of family history. If you’re worried about the prospect of having a working firearm visible, you can have a gunsmith remove the firing pin or bolt carrier group, rendering the firearm unusable.
