An indictment for a man charged with first-degree murder in his 5-month-old son’s death is on file, but he has not yet been arraigned.
Dominic G. Larson, 30, of DeKalb – whose son died after being hospitalized on Feb. 24, while suffering significant facial injuries while in the man’s care, according to records filed in court – appeared in court via a Zoom call from the DeKalb County jail on Monday.
He is charged with aggravated battery to a child, reckless conduct and misdemeanor endangering the life of a child. If convicted of the murder of a child, a Class X felony, he faces 30 to 60 years in prison.
DeKalb County Circuit Court Judge Philip Montgomery said during the heraing that Larson had been indicted by a grand jury. Court records show an indictment was filed on March 23.
The public defender assigned to Larson’s case, Bill Gibbs, asked for more time to go over material produced from a discovery request, however.
Larson is expected to be arraigned at 9 a.m. on April 9.
Larson has remained behind bars since Associate Judge Sarah Gallagher Chami granted the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office’s petition to deny Larson pretrial release at a hearing on Feb. 25.
In her ruling, Gallagher Chami cited his criminal history. Records from multiple courts show Larson has dealt with the justice system before.
Larson has been registered as a sex offender in Illinois since Aug. 7, 2020, in connection with a 2017 aggravated criminal sexual abuse conviction in Lee County. That victim was 5, and Larson was 24, according to the Illinois State Police’s sex offender database.
He was charged in March 2018 on the 2017 abuse case and pleaded guilty May 21, 2020, according to Lee County court records. He was sentenced to five years in prison in 2020, records show.
Larson also has a 2018 DUI conviction and a 2023 fleeing to elude conviction out of Ogle County, records show.
