Silver Cross ready for any possible surge in cases post Thanksgiving

As of Monday, Silver Cross Hospital had 114 COVID-19 patients. Of those, 109 were positive and five were awaiting results.

Silver Cross has 19 patients in the intensive care unit and 14 that are on ventilators.

The day before Thanksgiving, the total number of COVID-19 patients was 106, and 105 were already positive and one was waiting results.

"As part of its standard emergency operations plan, every hospital has a surge plan to help manage a large increase in patient volume, which takes into account the need for added beds, equipment and staff," said Deb Robbins, director of marketing and communications.

The hospital's surge plan was implemented in October as numbers began to steadily rise and in early November, a hospital utilization team began meeting daily to monitor bed capacity and staffing.

"We have been and will continue to be very proactive in our approach to meeting the increased demand," Robbins said.

Robbins said she couldn't speculate if they will see a post-Thanksgiving spike, but will continue to do all they can to care of the patients that seek their care.
