Suspicious salesman, lender thwart fraudulent $96K Porsche purchase

Would-be Indiana buyer used another's info to get loan

BATAVIA – A suspicious car salesman and lender thwarted a fraudulent attempt to get a $95,900 loan for a black 2018 Porsche 911, according to a police report released after a Freedom of Information act request.

Barnaba Autosport, 1183 Pierson Drive, Batavia, reported to police on Oct. 13 that it had received a call the day before from someone in Indiana wanting to buy the Porsche as a gift, the report stated.

The would-be buyer agreed to complete the credit application online and to send a copy of his Indiana driver’s license, the report stated.

The application was approved. A representative of the lender, Woodside Credit, called the number on the application to ask a few questions of the would-be buyer. But the phone would ring a few times then switch to a dead line signal, the report stated.

The representative asked the dealership if there was any other number to call – but managed to locate another number. But when the representative called that phone number, he discovered the would-be buyer had used that person’s identity to try to get the loan, the report stated.

The name, birth date, Social Security number and addressed had been given for the loan, but the true owner of that information had not applied for the loan, the report stated.

The lender’s representative told Barnaba Autosport not to sell the car to that buyer and to file a police report.

The salesman looked at the paperwork more thoroughly and did not think the signature on the bill of sale and the driver’s license looked anything alike, the report stated.

He was also suspicious of the sale because the would-be buyer never tried to negotiate a lower price and wanted the sale to go through very fast, the report stated.
