Speaker to talk about effects COVID-19 has on college admissions

Applying to college can be a daunting task in itself, let alone doing so in the middle of a global pandemic. And just like everything else, colleges have been affected.

So what is it going to look like over the course of the next few years?

Thomas Jaworski, founder of Quest College Consulting, will be speaking virtually to parents and their teens in an event hosted by the New Lenox Public Library at 7 p.m. Oct. 23.

Jaworski's speech will examine the effects of canceled standardized exams, virtual AP tests, high school transcripts and what college admissions might look like for Fall 2020.

The library's teen coordinator, Melissa Leggero, has not been able to do much programming since the pandemic began, but in talking with students recently, she has learned that the students were not enjoying class just from home.

"A lot of kids are putting off going to college and staying home and going to junior college instead of going to a university and paying for services that may not even be available," Leggero said. "That is part of the college experience. It is tough to learn and take classes from a dorm room."

She is looking forward to Jaworski informing the students on ways to make the process smoother and easier.

The event will be held through Zoom and registration is required at newlenox.librarymarket.com and clicking on "The effect of COVID-19 on college admissions: What will college admissions look like in the near and distant future."

An invite will be sent after registering. There are only 40 seats available. A recording of the event will be available for a short time after the event concludes.
