One of Ottawa's hardest hit businesses expects to be open soon

Floor to Ceiling plans to reopen by Monday, at latest

The co-owner of Floor to Ceiling in Ottawa expects to be open this week, as soon as power returns to his building.

That outcome may not have seemed plausible Monday after high winds from a storm sent the roof from the business flying into nearby vehicles, neighboring businesses and into the Illinois & Michigan Canal.

Co-owner Gary Couch said he and three other employees saw some shingles fly toward their business and ran to the basement.

"That's when the power went out," he said.

Couch said when they opened the door, they could hear the crinkle of metal.

The top roof had blown off the building. It was added about 16 years ago to cover the building's flat roof, said Couch, who has owned the business for 14 years.

He is hopeful a couple of spots will be tarped off and power will be restored. Then it's back to business.

"Once we get the power going, we can open right after that," Couch said. "At the latest, Monday."
