Will Oglesby open its swimming pool this summer? It won’t happen any time soon, but it’s not off the table.
Commissioner Jim Cullinan said he has fielded calls asking if there is any hope of salvaging even part of swimming season, and he wondered aloud during Monday's City Council meeting if the city might accommodate the children.
“The kids will probably be out of school until September,” Cullinan said, “and I just thought it be something good for the kids.”
Mayor Dom Rivara wouldn’t commit to such a pledge – the city awaits the OK to enter the next phase of reopening – but he wouldn’t rule it out, either.
“We’ll get some direction on what can happen and what can’t happen,” Rivara said, reminding residents that Phase 4 could begin the last week of June.
Separately, the council approved the use of nearly $800,000 in TIF funds, but only if the city gets a grant worth $2.4 million from Springfield.
The council approved a resolution committing local funds totaling $799,100 from tax increment financing districts. Those funds, however, are only to be used for the matching portion of a $2.4 million grant for which the city has applied.
As previously reported, the city wants Springfield's help funding a massive water-sewer replacement program on portions of Columbia Avenue and Walnut Street.
Finally, Rivara appealed for more donations to the micropantry, the help-yourself food bin perched outside City Hall.
Rivara said he was contacted by the manager asking both for monetary donations and quick-preparation meals, such as instant pancakes and macaroni and cheese.
“We’ve got a lot of people hurting,” Rivara said. “Please dig down and help them.”
In other matters, the council:
• Learned the city was remitted for the boat landing, receiving a check for about $56,000.
• Will receive a draft appropriations ordinance, with a planned voting date of July 20.
• Tabled a proposed addition to the parks and recreation building.
