Blackhawks trade goalie Lehner, defenseman Gustafsson on deadline day

The Blackhawks were part of a busy day around the NHL in the hours before Monday’s trade deadline, moving goalie Robin Lehner and defenseman Erik Gustafsson.

The Hawks acquired backup goaltender Malcolm Subban, prospect defenseman Slava Demin and a second-round pick in the 2020 draft from the Vegas Golden Knights. To complete the trade, the Hawks sent Lehner to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for unsigned draft choice Martins Dzierkals. Lehner and Dzierkals subsequently were traded to Vegas.

Lehner said he was excited to be going to Vegas, tweeting: “Going to be a ride. Can’t wait to get there.” He is expected to back up Marc-Andre Fleury.

Subban, 26, is the younger brother of New Jersey Devils defenseman P.K. Subban, a Norris Trophy winner.

Malcolm Subban is 9-7-3 with a 3.18-goals-against average and .890 save percentage in 20 games and 19 starts with Vegas this season. Over parts of five seasons in the NHL with Vegas and Boston, Subban has appeared in 65 games and 60 starts with a record of 30-23-7. His career GAA is 2.97, and his career save percentage is .899.

Lehner made 33 appearances and 31 starts for the Hawks this season, posting a record of 16-10-5. He has a GAA of 3.01 and a save percentage of .918 this season.

The Hawks also acquired a third-round pick in the 2020 draft from the Calgary Flames in exchange for Gustafsson. The Hawks will receive the earlier of Calgary’s two third-round picks this year.

Gustafsson recorded 26 points, including six goals, in 59 games with the Hawks this season. In 214 career games with the Hawks, the defenseman had 28 goals and 116 points.

In a trade involving minor leaguers, the Hawks acquired defenseman T.J. Brennan from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for center Nathan Noel.
