Cops: Plainfield police arrest Iowa man who threatened woman

An Iowa man who tried to run a woman he dated off a road in Florida was apprehended by Plainfield police when he traveled to her parents’ home, police said.

On Wednesday, Chance Michaels, 46, of Sioux City was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and written threats to do harm, according to the Collier County Sheriff's Office in Florida.

The charges stem from a Jan. 29 incident in North Naples, Florida, where Michaels confronted a woman about their relationship, followed her in his vehicle and “intentionally rammed her vehicle in an attempt to run her off the road,” the sheriff’s office said.

The woman told detectives she went on a date with Michaels after meeting him on social media but a friend informed her of his past criminal history, police said.

When she told Michaels she didn’t want to see him anymore, he “got angry and abandoned her,” police said, and then sent her more than 100 text messages in which he threatened to harm her.

"She told detectives that Michaels has been sending her threats via social media and texts and that she was in fear of him," police said.

Michaels is awaiting extradition to Florida, according to police.

Michaels also faces Will County charges of identity theft, use of a counterfeit credit card and continuing a financial criminal enterprise, records show. The offenses were allegedly committed on Wednesday and stem from a Plainfield police investigation.

Michaels' bond was set at $500,000.
