36-year-old McHenry man charged in fatal overdose

Russell S. Levand, 36, of the 2200 block of Alton Drive, McHenry

A McHenry man remained at the McHenry County Jail on Friday after police said he delivered the heroin-fentanyl combination that killed Jessica Hocin of McHenry.

Hocin was found dead June 1 at the McHenry home where she lived with 36-year-old Russell S. Levand, according to a criminal complaint filed with the McHenry County Circuit Clerk’s Office. A hypodermic needle was found under Hocin’s body, according to the complaint.

Levand, of the 2200 block of Alton Drive, is charged with drug-induced homicide in connection with Hocin’s death. According to a motion prosecutors filed Friday, Levand communicated with Hocin about the drugs hours before the woman died.

Toxicology tests revealed that Hocin had fentanyl – a synthetic opioid that can exaggerate the effects of other drugs – in her system when she died, court documents show.

Levand also is charged with resisting a peace officer after he allegedly pulled away from police during his arrest Thursday, court records show.

The most serious charge, drug-induced homicide, typically is punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

Resisting a peace officer is a misdemeanor offense that often results in less than one year in jail.

Levand’s total bond is set at $251,000, meaning he would need to post $25,100 bail to be released. He’s due back in court for a bond hearing Tuesday.
