Joliet Plan Commission meeting on NorthPoint scheduled

The Joliet Plan Commission will consider NorthPoint Development's annexation proposal at a special meeting Feb. 24.

The date was set Monday after the city took the item off the commission's agenda for its regular meeting in February.

Interim City Manager Steve Jones said the NorthPoint plan still is tentatively scheduled to go to the City Council for consideration March 17 if the project gets a green light from the Plan Commission.

NorthPoint wants to annex nearly 1,300 acres to Joliet for its yet to be built Compass Business Park.

The entire project could be 2,700 acres and extend to Manhattan and Elwood. NorthPoint already owns nearly 200 acres of industrial zoned land in Elwood and has approached Manhattan about potential annexation of up to 1,200 acres.

The Joliet portion will be considered by the Plan Commission at a public hearing at 4 p.m. on Feb. 24.

Jones said last week that Joliet was running up against a deadline for posting notice of a public hearing on the NorthPoint plan when the decision was made Friday to schedule a special meeting in which the project would be the only agenda item.

"It might be better just to get this on its own agenda so it's not competing with other issues," Jones said.
