UPDATED 5:45 P.M. WEDNESDAY, JAN. 29:
SANDWICH – A Sandwich man was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic battery last week, according to police.
Zachary T. Leal, 24, of the 300 block of West Center Street, Sandwich, was arrested by Sandwich police at about 8:20 a.m. Friday, Jan. 24, according to a Jan. 28 news release from Sandwich police.
According to DeKalb County court records, Leal was charged with aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony; aggravated battery of a pregnant or handicapped person, a Class 3 felony; and domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor.
If convicted of the aggravated domestic battery charge, Leal faces up to seven years in prison.
Sandwich police responded to the same block as Leal's address for a report of a domestic disturbance, according to a Friday, Jan. 24, police report. Police said in the report a female, who was inside the residence and about 10 weeks pregnant, alleged that she and Leal got into an argument and he pushed her against a wall, then kicked her in the stomach and she fell on a nearby television as a result.
The female was transported to Northwestern Medicine Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich for a hand fracture and for a check on the health of the unborn baby, the police report said. Ultrasound technicians at the hospital were able to find the baby's heartbeat "and that it was strong," according to the police report.
Leal told police he was pretty drunk and didn't know how the female received her injuries or how he received a bump on his head, but that he would "put his money on" the female, according to the police report.
Leal was not able to post bond and was taken to DeKalb County Jail in Sycamore, according to the Sandwich police news release. A DeKalb County judge set a $15,000 recognizance bond for Leal on Saturday, Jan. 25, and Leal was released on his own signature Monday, Jan. 27, according to DeKalb County court documents.
Leal also was ordered to have no contact with the victim, according to DeKalb County court documents.
Leal is due back in court 9 a.m. March 6 at DeKalb County Courthouse, 133 W. State St. in Sycamore.
