Sterling man charged with identity theft, stealing more than $100,000

MORRISON – A Sterling man is being held on $25,000 bond after pleading not guilty to charges that he took more than $100,000 in cash from a local business by stealing the owner’s identity and draining his PayPal account over the course of about 8 years.

Michael P. Burnett, 36, is charged with aggravated Identity theft and identity theft, each of which is punishable by 6 to 30 years in prison, and with theft of more than $100,000 but less that $500,000, which is punishable by 4 to 15 years.

The theft occurred between July 1, 2008 and April 30, 2016, investigators say. The specific amount of currency taken was not detailed in court records.

Burnett pleaded not guilty to the charges on Sept. 25 and has a preliminary hearing Monday.

He also has two other felony cases pending in Whiteisde County:

On March 4, Burnett he was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI and with misdemeanor driving while his license was suspended.

On June 24, he was charged with aggravated battery, along with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery, interfering with the reporting of domestic violence and resisting arrest, all misdemeanors, in connection with an incident that occurred on June 6, court records show.

He has an Oct. 23 pretrial hearing in both cases.
