Will Grundy Counties IL Genealogical Society dissolves

After 37 years serving the genealogy and family research community, the Will Grundy Counties IL Genealogical Society has dissolved.

Originally established in 1982, the society held its meetings at the Wilmington Public Library. Some years later, the meetings and growing genealogical library collection were moved to Fossil Ridge Library in Braidwood.

Since 2000, the society home has been the Coal City Public Library who has graciously accepted ownership of the society's library collection.

In recent years, attendance and participation in activities and programs has steadily dwindled to the point when, this year there is nobody to fill the elected and appointed board positions.

With deep regret, the Board voted to dissolve, effective July 31, 2019. The genealogy community continues to thrive with internet-based research databases and local historical societies and genealogy clubs.

Current and future genealogists can find help and resources at their local library and historical society. Also, several libraries are holding Genealogy Clubs, informal in nature, where participants can discuss research problems and successes, new finds, how-to's on using databases and software, among other things.

The Wilmington Public Library Genealogy Club meets 6 p.m. the first Monday of the month. The Coal City Public Library Genealogy Club meets 10 a.m. the second Saturday of the month, and the Joliet Public Library Genealogy Club meets at 6:30 p.m. the third Monday of the month at the downtown branch.
