Lake in the Hills man dies from injuries sustained in Algonquin excavator incident

A construction worker who was hit by an excavator last week in Algonquin has died, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Preliminary autopsy results showed that Anthony Gazda, 36, of Lake in the Hills, died of crushing injuries, according to a statement from Lake County Coroner Howard Cooper. Toxicology results are pending.

The incident occurred May 21 in a closed construction site in the zero to 100 block of South Main Street in Algonquin, where bridge work is ongoing, Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Rescue District Battalion Chief John Greene said at the time.

The excavator had been in the process of pivoting when Gazda was pinned between the machine and a concrete barrier, Greene said.

First responders took Gazda to Northwestern Medicine Huntley Hospital, where Flight for Life landed and then flew him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Greene said.

A visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Davenport Family Funeral Homes and Crematory, 419 E Terra Cotta Ave., in Crystal Lake. Gazda died May 23, according to his obituary.

"Tony will be remembered as a loving individual who was always there to help friends and neighbors," his obituary reads.

A Rochelle man died earlier this month after the incident involving an excavator. A tree fell on the machine May 4 near Union.
