WAUKEGAN – May 1 was the annual Community Cleanup hosted by Roberti Community House.
RCH has held the event every year since 2012.
The cleanup allows community members to take part in bettering the city as they work side by side with their hands in the dirt.
As many as 90 community members attended the cleanup. Local organizations including the Waukegan Police Department, Chicago Botanic Gardens, University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners and Youthbuild of Lake County were at the cleanup to lend a helping hand. DK Organics took part by donating compost that was spread throughout the gardens.
Participants split up between three cleanup sites: Roberti Community House, Holy Family Community Garden and Roberti Culinary Pathway. All three gardens were cleaned, weeded and prepped for planting.
Roberti Culinary Pathway has fresh soil and all new landscaping. The raised beds at Roberti Community House garden are ready for the Junior Green Youth Farm to plant, harvest, and tend to in the spring and summer seasons.
The Community Garden is ready to open June 4, when the whole community is invited to help tend and enjoy the garden and its harvest. Join the Roberti Community House from 10 a.m. to noon June 4 for the opening of the Community Garden.
