Liquor stores in Will County host sticker shocker campaign

Students will participate in a campaign at several liquor stores in Will County that will warn against allowing minors to purchase alcohol or use a fake ID to try.

The Sticker Shocker campaign will take place Saturday at several liquor stores in the Will County area.

The event is the result of collaboration between the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, the Will County Sheriff’s Office, Kenwood Liquors in Homer Glen, Plainfield Liquors in Plainfield, State Street Liquors in Lockport and two Jewel stores in Joliet.

The store will be participating in the initiative as part of Alcohol Awareness Month, Kathy Hoffmeyer, spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, said in an email.

Students in sixth grade through 12th grade will place stickers and bottle hangers on alcohol packaging at the Homer Glen liquor store as a warning that it is unlawful to purchase alcohol as a minor or to use fake identification to try, Hoffmeyer said.

“The initiative and stickers also have warnings for adults who purchase alcohol for minors,” she said.

Kenwood Liquors General Manager Michael Dixon said he was approached by the sheriff’s office about the event. He said his grandfather started Kenwood in 1949 in Chicago, and it expanded to Homer Glen and Oak Lawn.

He said the campaign seemed like a “great thing to get involved in.”

“I’ve seen programs like this out and about, so we were pretty happy when they contacted us,” Dixon said.
