Jon Domanico is set to expand the family business with a fourth-generation deli and butcher shop in McHenry.
Hub Market, located next to the movie theater at 1210 N. Green St., is set for a Monday grand opening. The shop sells deli meats and cheeses, fresh and frozen seafood and cuts of lamb, chicken, duck, veal and beef, as well as a variety of bratwurst and sausages made in-house.
A full bar and restaurant are also part of the business plan. Hub Market will serve soups made from scratch with homemade stock, ceviche, cheese and meat plates, fresh oysters, muffaletta and a variety of other deli and hot sandwiches.
The Domanico family has owned and operated Orchard Prime Meats and Wine Shoppe and Tapas Calpe in Cary for the past 40 years. Hub Market is a similar concept.
“There is nothing like this in the area,” said Domanico. “We had always had our eye on McHenry. ... The town is great. It’s revitalized. It’s everything you could hope for.”
The store has plans for outdoor seating in the summer, has a banquet space and plans to offer wine tastings and classes eventually.
The food the shop plans to sell is minimally processed without added hormones or preservatives. The sausages also are gluten-free, said Nick Domanico, Jon’s father.
“Even our sauces are homemade,” he said. “The meats are all hand-cut. Everything is the best we can buy. It’s very clean and Old World style.”
The business is owned by 11 local investors, including Jon Domanico, under an LLC.
The name Hub Market is a nod to where the Domanico’s deli business dealings began in Chicago.
“The Hub Market was my great-grandpa’s store in the 1930s,” Jon Domanico said. “We took the name out of retirement.”
Hub Market will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for 5 p.m. The shop plans to stay open until 8 p.m. on the weekends.
The new business has been in the works since McHenry’s mayor put out a social media call for development ideas and investors to fill the vacant property, which formerly housed a sports store.
