University Park shooter gets five years in prison

Teen agreed to speak against another suspect

A 15-year-old boy who initially was charged with attempted first-degree murder for allegedly shooting another person pleaded guilty to a lesser charge because apparently he was not the actual shooter.

On Oct. 4, Malik D. Caraway, 15, of the 700 block of Union Drive in University Park, pleaded guilty to aggravated discharge of a firearm.

Caraway had been arrested in connection with an incident where a person was shot April 3 in Will County.

Caraway was sentenced to five years in prison, and he will be required to serve 85 percent of that sentence, Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles B. Pelkie said.

Prosecutors agreed to allow Caraway to plead guilty to a lesser change because he made statements against Nikolas O. Vaughn, 18, of University Park, that implicated Vaughn as the person who allegedly shot another man, Pelkie said.

Caraway reportedly did fire his gun during the incident in which the person was shot, but he deliberately missed him.

Pelkie said Caraway has agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in the case against Vaughn, who is charged with murder and aggravated battery. Vaughn has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Vaughn currently is being held at the Will County jail on $3 million bond, of which he’ll need 10 percent to post bail.

Vaughn’s next court date was scheduled for Oct. 15.
