A Joliet man allegedly attacked another man and choked him until he almost lost consciousness, police said.
About 9:45 p.m. Monday, officers responded to a complaint from a man who wanted to press a domestic battery charge against his fiancée’s mother’s boyfriend, Joseph E. Stombaugh, 37, of the 1300 block of Benham Drive. Stombaugh had allegedly attacked him.
When the officers met with the alleged victim, he said that Stombaugh attacked him after they had gotten into an argument, Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin said in an email. The man said Stombaugh threw him against a refrigerator and then choked him to the point he almost lost consciousness, Gavin said.
Joliet police conducted an investigation of the incident, Gavin said, then obtained a warrant for Stombaugh’s arrest on Friday.
The alleged victim was taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville, where he received medical treatment for injuries that he suffered in the attack, Gavin said.
Stombaugh was located at his home in the 1300 block of Benham Drive. He was arrested on charges of domestic battery causing bodily harm and aggravated battery by strangling.
After Stombaugh was arrested, he was taken to the Will County jail, where he was being held on a $35,000 bond.
Stombaugh posted $3,500 – or 10 percent – of his bond and was released from custody about 5 a.m. Tuesday.
