A 15-year-old boy has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm for allegedly trying to kill another person, according to a criminal complaint.

On Monday, Will County sheriff deputies charged Malik D. Caraway, 15, of the 700 block of Union Drive in University Park with attempting to shoot another person to death with a firearm. The alleged incident took place on April 3 in Will County. Caraway is being charged as an adult.

The criminal complaint alleges Caraway intended to commit first-degree murder by shooting another a person with a firearm with the intent to kill. The complaint also alleges Caraway committed battery by knowingly and without legal justification discharging a firearm at the same person, which caused them injury.

Caraway’s bond was set for $750,000 and 10 percent would be needed to post bail.

Both charges against Caraway are Class X felonies that are punishable by between six to 30 years in prison if convicted.

In response to an inquiry about the charges, Kathy Hoffmeyer, Will County sheriff spokeswoman, only said that Caraway is a juvenile who is 15.

Caraway has demanded a trial over the charges, according to court records. He is being represented by attorney David Sotomayer, according to court records.

Caraway already was detained at the River Valley Juvenile Detention Center during a court appearance on Monday.

A judge ordered Caraway be transported from the juvenile detention center to court at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. A preliminary hearing in his case is scheduled for Friday.
