The Yorkville Big Band and its many fans thanked and celebrated the band’s retiring director, Rick Falato, during the band’s concert Sunday, May 20, at the Yorkville American Legion.

Also honored was Falato’s wife, Carol, who has served as the band’s “Mrs. of Ceremonies.”

The Falatos moved to Yorkville in 1993 and organized the 21-piece band. Over the past 25 years, the band has entertained thousands of area residents at concerts and dance events throughout the Fox Valley area.

Rick Falato taught instrumental music in Illinois public schools for 38 years. Before beginning his teaching career, Falato played trumpet in the U.S. Army Headquarters Band in Atlanta, Georgia, from 1958 to 1960.

Victor Anderson, director of bands at Yorkville High School, will succeed Falato as Big Band director.

Sunday’s event began like other band concerts, with a one-hour dance lesson followed by the concert and more dancing.

Those in attendance enjoyed listening and swingin’ to the sounds of the big band.
