Packaged beer, wine to be sold at Glen Ellyn French Market

Village trustees approve creation of seasonal market liquor license

GLEN ELLYN – Those visiting the Glen Ellyn French Market this summer and fall will be able to purchase beer and wine to go with the fresh fruits and vegetables they buy.

During their April 9 Village Board meeting, Glen Ellyn trustees approved the creation of a seasonal market liquor license that will allow the sale of packaged beer and wine at the French Market, which is facilitated by Bensidoun USA in cooperation with the village and the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce. The market was relocated last season to Metra's southeast parking lot between Main Street and Forest Avenue.

Malloy's Finest Wine & Spirits and Marche gourmet wine and cheese shop have applied for the license. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sundays from June through October.

Those businesses that apply for the license must hold a Class C or P liquor license and be in good standing. The license authorizes the retail sale of wine and beer only in its original package and not for consumption on the premises at seasonal markets, provided that samples for tasting may be furnished.

There is a $50 fee for the annual license. Glen Ellyn Economic Development Coordinator Meredith Hannah said she sees the value in creating the license.

"The creation of this adjunct liquor license classification allows existing businesses an opportunity to increase their sales and generate more revenue for the village," she said. "This also allows the village’s French Market to be competitive with other neighboring markets."
