JOLIET – Joliet police cited 16 people for allegedly selling tobacco to minors.
Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in an email that the citations were part of an ongoing compliance detail that enlists the aid of juveniles to buy or try to buy tobacco from vendors.
“Joliet police detectives are checking area businesses for compliance with the sale and distribution of tobacco and smokeless tobacco products or accessories in any of its forms to any minor under 18 years of age,” Gregory said.
One of the 16, Mohammed Altahat, 67, of the 100 block of North Chicago Street, who was seen by a Joliet police detective to have sold a pack of Newport cigarettes to a 15-year-old juvenile. He was issued a citation at 5:37 p.m. on Friday.
