Roundup: Morton basketball gets Martinucci's 300th win, in thick of Gold race

Tony Martinucci's lost track of when exactly he reached the milestone.

His Morton team, you see, is winning a lot lately.

The Mustangs, 11-9 heading into this week, are in a logjam atop the competitive West Suburban Gold. Morton (5-2 in conference), Willowbrook, Proviso East and Hinsdale South all have two conference losses going into this week's action.

"We play in a very tough conference," Martinucci said. "I don't think people realize how tough a league it is."

Martinucci knows, a coach for 20 years at Morton. The last 18 have come as head coach. He recently won his 300th game, and now sits at 303 career wins.

"Seen a lot of faces come and go," Martinucci said. "The wins we've got at Morton, it's we, not me."

The most recent came came Jan. 26, 62-53 at Addison Trail. Stephon Jordan had 16 points in the first half, and Latik Murphy 19 points with five 3-pointers in the second half. Vinny Belcaster scored 14 points.

Morton still has home games left with Hinsdale South and Proviso East, and plays at Willowbrook and Downers Grove South.

"Those guys all score, then we're OK. We're playing very good, playing pretty consistent," Martinucci said. "Our conference is just so good. Leyden upset Downers South, Hinsdale South got beat by Addison Trail, we beat Willowbrook. I think 9-3 might win the conference. You hope we can finish well."
